"A Diary Entry" by Brandon Tay

This is a diary entry (situational writing) written by Brandon Tay (Primary 5).

Diary Entry

Dear Diary,

Something annoying occurred today during recess! I was lining up in the queue to buy chicken rice when a girl cut queue and darted in front of me. Having already waited for a long time, I was aggravated but decided not to lose my temper. I politely informed her that I had been there first. She submitted meekly and returned to her former position behind me.

However, just as I was about to step forward and order my food, she leapt forward again, took my place, and before I knew it, was ordering her food. Upset by her inconsiderate behaviour, I resolved to inform my teacher about it.

All of a sudden, a voice interrupted my thoughts.

The stallholder was nagging at the same girl for not having enough money to pay for her food. Her plate of food cost $2 but there was only a ten-cent coin in her purse.

The students behind were whispering furiously while the embarrassed girl stared at the ground as if she were wishing it would open up and swallow her. The stallholder then suggested in a calm voice that the girl pay him the next day. She thanked him profusely, and went away, red-faced.

I think it was kind of the stallholder to make that offer. I will learn from him to be more gracious.

That’s all for today! See you tomorrow!
